In today's article, we are going to discuss What Is The Difference Between Health And Wellness. For the past few weeks, I have been making videos about mental health falling under the realm of wellness. But what exactly is health and what exactly is wellness?

We often use the two interchangeably. But are they the same thing or are they different? According to the World Health Organization. Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease. There are some determining factors that help you better understand health. These include social, economic, and physical environments, along with the person's individual characteristics and behaviors. Without distinction of race, religion, political belief, or economic or social condition.

So if that is the definition of health and the determining factors to define health. Then what exactly is wellness, and how does that all fit into this? Wellness, according to Miriam Webster, is the quality or state of being in good health. Especially as an actively sought goal. So in reality, wellness is the process and the changes we go through to reach our fullest potential and to also enhance our overall well-being. The determinants of wellness are emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual wellness. I know that was a lot, but now that we have established what health and wellness are, what makes them both different?

What Is The Difference Between Health And Wellness?

The difference between health and wellness is that health is the goal and wellness is the active process of achieving that goal. Now you must be wondering, why is it necessary to know? What will knowing this do for me? Well, the difference between the two is necessary to know for a few reasons. It helps us to recognize that we can't always choose the state of our health, but we do have the conscious choice to make active decisions towards wellness.

For example, diagnosis of Crohn's disease, having asthma, or getting diagnosed with, say, type one diabetes falls under health. Meanwhile, making the conscious decision to eat healthier or incorporating more exercise in your diet is what defines wellness. With that being said, can you have one without the other? Which one comes first? Honestly, you can't have one without the other.

But achieving wellness should be the first thing that you decide to master. Take time to self-reflect on what achieving wellness is going to do for you personally. Set those goals and ask yourself why those are goals you want to achieve before setting any kind of health goals for yourself. Something you might want to keep in mind too is that wellness is a choice, which means that you have the ability to take action towards achieving optimal health. It is indeed a long journey to achieve both.
